In this article, we will talk about the Sustainable Development Agenda and how fashion industry brands are committed to following the goals set out in it.
Due to the current international situation, in terms of sustainability, the Sustainable Development Agenda and the 17 objectives set out therein have a mission: they are a call to raise awareness in countries in order to "end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere". These goals were adopted by all members of the United Nations in 2015, in order to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The United Nations has called this process of implementing the 17 goals 'A Decade of Action', in order to achieve them by 2030. These goals cover different areas: firstly, 'Global Action', to ensure better leaders, more resources and more effective solutions; secondly, 'Local Action', referring to the need to incorporate different policies, institutions and regulatory frameworks of governments, cities and local authorities. And finally, 'People Action': in recent years, we have seen how, especially young people, have managed to carry out different movements to achieve a better planet. In this respect, the objectives of sustainable development seek to call upon civil society, the media, the private sector and other publics of interest, to generate a movement that will succeed in bringing about the required transformations.
In this regard, the brands most consumed by the public have known how to adapt to these changes and objectives set by the United Nations to make their actions known in terms of sustainability and development. For example, in the article in which we spoke about Inditex, we could see how the brand is committed to fulfilling different sustainable development objectives and, in its Annual Report, we can see how it carries out this process. In this way, the big brands position themselves as companies in favour of a necessary change in terms of sustainability and commit themselves to minimising their impact on the planet.
In upcoming articles, we will talk about different sustainable actions that brands carry out, as well as examples of specific brands that carry out a process and offer garments that are as sustainable as possible.
